The STAART Principles of Disability (SPoD) have been created by self-selected University of Greenwich disabled students; disabled graduates; and disabled staff. The Principles have been created as we do not think the current models of disability fit our purpose. STAART have never worked to the medical model of disability (which perceives disabled people as passive deficit human beings) and in recent years have adhered to the affirmative model of disability which claims disability as a positive identity; and that disabled people do not need to be ‘fixed’. We believe the principles we have developed are more comprehensive and accurate.

The University of Greenwich will be adopting the Principles on Friday 2nd December 2022 to coincide with the United Nations International Day for Persons with Disabilities (as the 3rd of December 2022 is a Saturday) and we are having an in-person and streamed launch on the Greenwich campus from 5.00pm. The launch will be in partnership with the National Association of Disabled Staff Networks (NASDN).

The SPoD will have a Creative Commons Licence attached which will enable other organisations to adopt the principles for themselves. You can book a place to attend the launch remotely here:
