Since its inception in 2020, members have worked to develop recommendations for funders, institutions, and disciplines to address barriers faced by those who are marginalised due to disability. The white paper has been the culmination of over 3 years of work and will provide guidance for employers, funders, and policy makers in order to increase inclusivity of people with neurodivergence, disability, and / or chronic illness in STEMM careers.
STEMM careers are enriched by people with the skills and ways of thinking that are brought by people who are neurodivergent or disabled so by excluding these groups due to systemic barriers, progress is stifled. The solutions we propose will ensure that science does not suffer by ensuring support structures are in place. We also call for recognition of intersectionality of barriers due to other protected characteristics with disability.

❓ Do #Disabled #people feel included in STEMM? No? Well, we don’t think so and we want that to change now!
The NADSN – National Association of Disabled Staff Networks, which I chair, set up a #STEMM #Action #Group back in 2020, open to Disabled colleagues who work in and around STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) disciplines. The Group’s overarching aim from the outset was to develop a set of recommendations to address the barriers faced by Disabled people in STEMM, including ourselves, and take these to people in power and influence.
By the summer of 2021 we had created a #Problem #Statement which we were invited to present at numerous conferences and symposia, and even a parliamentary inquiry! This provoked some great interactions, conversations, interest and influence on #Anti-#Ableism in STEMM.
The Group didn’t stop there! What we really wanted to see was action! Building on the Problem Statement, NADSN and its STEMM Action Group are now proud to present:
💥 Towards a fully inclusive environment for disabled people in STEMM: A NADSN White Paper
A “#White #Paper” is government-type speak for a position paper, which is the same sense we’re using this term.
The Group have organised an official #launch of our White Paper on Monday 31st March 16:00-18:00 at the University of Strathclyde, #Glasgow, hosted by our incredible colleague Dr Jen Remnant.
We would be delighted to cordially invite you to please join us there. Please use this Eventbrite link to register in-person:
👉 Eventbrite: NADSN White Paper – Inclusive STEMM.
Please contact Jen (jennifer.remnant@strath.ac.uk) for an online option if you’re unable to attend in person.
We are also looking to organise a follow-on event in London at a later date (tbc). The event in Glasgow will be more of a celebration, while the event in London will be more focussed on policy-makers.
For both events, we are sending invitations to members of the UK and Scottish parliaments, government agencies, funding bodies, learned societies, professional associations, industry links, journalists, institutional policy makers, EDIA advocates and activists, allies, etc. If you know of key people who we should invite to both/either of the launch events, please do let us know.
We hope you are as excited as we are about this and look forward to having your support!
