Members of the NADSN Founding Steering Group recently ran a Workshop at the NADP 2015 International Conference.
The questions from the audience highlighted that organisations still have a long way to go to ensure disability equality and so it’s given the group lots of ‘food for thought’! Thanks to those of you who participated.
Mona Patel noted some of the main points from the Workshop:
- How to gain ‘buy-in’ from senior colleagues for establishing networks?: We suggested capturing and analysing E&D data and breaking it down by disability to draw inferences which would provide an evidence-base for exec/management etc. Holding focus groups with disabled staff or running a survey.
- Lack of any disability equality initiatives or cultural change activities within institutions: We talked about benchmarking and how to go about doing this such as Two Ticks and Disability Standard, also about ECU maybe introducing something in the future. We felt that there needed to be something robust enough to get people sitting up and taking action.
- Need for guidance especially around protocols for reasonable adjustments: Mona mentioned MMU’s Guidance (for prospective disabled staff, disabled staff and their line managers) which she developed: http://www.mmu.ac.uk/equality-and-diversity/disability/.
